Talking with your teen

Improving communication

It may be helpful to keep in mind that teens:

  • Are trying to figure themselves out
  • May want privacy when it comes to their health
  • May worry their peers won’t understand their condition
  • Will likely go through a stage of risky behavior

When you notice signs of growing self-reliance in your teenager, take it as an opportunity for you to discuss future goals. Talk to your teen about how current choices may either assist or interfere with reaching those goals. The following approaches may help you when communicating with your teen or young adult:

  1. Express empathy
  2. Support self-esteem
  3. Roll with resistance
  4. Hold them accountable
  5. Ask open-ended questions
