Scholarship Background
To receive an application for the Soozie Courter Sharing a Brighter Tomorrow
Hemophilia Scholarship Program 2003-2004 academic year, please call 888-322-6010.
To be eligible for the scholarships, students must have either hemophilia
A or B, and be either a high school senior or have a graduate equivalency
diploma (GED) or currently be enrolled in an accredited junior college,
college (undergraduate or graduate), or vocational school. The scholarship
applicants are required to provide a personal essay or statement, information
on their academic achievements, and letters of recommendation. A committee
of hemophilia health care providers reviews the applications and selects
scholarship winners. More than 125 individuals from 33 states, Puerto
Rico, and Canada applied to the scholarship program this year. The scholarships
are dedicated to the memory of Soozie Courter, RN, and her contributions
to the hemophilia community. During her career in the pharmaceutical industry,
Soozie worked on developing products to treat hemophilia. By naming the
scholarships in her honor, the Hemophilia Group at Wyeth recognizes Courter's
compassion and interest in all issues related to the scientific advancement
of hemophilia research.
Hemophilia is a rare, inherited blood clotting disorder for which there
currently is no cure. People with hemophilia are deficient in the key
proteins that are vital in the clotting cascade to prevent bleeding -
factor VIII (hemophilia A) or factor IX (hemophilia B). Both forms of
hemophilia are characterized by spontaneous hemorrhages or prolonged bleeding,
typically into joints and soft tissue. In the United States, nearly 4,000
people have hemophilia B and between 15,000 and 17,000 people have hemophilia
A. Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of Wyeth, has leading products in
the areas of women's health care, cardiovascular disease, central nervous
system, inflammation, hemophilia, oncology and vaccines. Wyeth (NYSE:WYE)
is one of the world's largest research-driven pharmaceutical and health
care products companies. It is a leader in the discovery, development,
manufacturing, and marketing of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, biotechnology
