Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Donates Funds to the World Federation of Hemophilia and the Hemophilia Society of Thailand
"Helping Hands" Signature Board Demonstrates Community Support for Hemophilia
Madison, NJ (December 1, 2004) In keeping with its continued support of the hemophilia community, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of Wyeth (NYSE:WYE), announced its recent donation of $5,000 each to the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) and the Hemophilia Society of Thailand (HST) at the Hemophilia 2004 World Congress in Bangkok, Thailand.
"We are pleased to support the mission of these two organizations and to provide funding for their invaluable work around the world and in Thailand," said Michael P. Russomano, Vice President & Global Business Manager, Hemophilia at Wyeth.
To encourage individual expressions of support for the hemophilia community, Wyeth created the "Helping Hands" signature board, which debuted at the World Congress. Individuals were encouraged to sign the board in support of the funds donated by Wyeth.
"The Helping Hands signature board was a wonderful way for Congress attendees to express their support for the hemophilia community. Not only did it promote a strong spirit of community, it also facilitated a generous donation from Wyeth, which we will utilize for our programs," said Miklos Fulop, WFH Executive Director.
"This donation is very meaningful to us because it shows that people outside the country are showing concern for us," said Parttraporn Isarangkura, MD, DSc, Chairman, Hemophilia Society of Thailand.
Wyeth is a major supporter of the WFH and has been the exclusive sponsor of its Twinning program since 2001. Through this program, treatment centers and hemophilia patient organizations in developed countries are paired with corresponding organizations in developing countries to help share knowledge and best practices.
Hemophilia is a rare, inherited blood clotting disorder for which there is currently no cure. People with hemophilia are deficient in the key proteins that are vital in the clotting cascade to prevent bleeding factor VIII (hemophilia A) or factor IX (hemophilia B).
